What is IRIS Conductive Education
IRIS Conductive Education is an early childhood education programme for children with cerebral palsy and other motor disorders. Conductor staff work with children and their families to teach children how to develop and maintain skills for living. The programme encourages and motivates children to develop and achieve to their greatest potential, and to live a full, happy and productive life.
The approach is educational and is integrated with the New Zealand early childhood education framework. We believe that every child deserves the opportunity to see and experience their role in the world as an active one.
Who we serve
IRIS Conductive Education works with infants and children from birth through to ten years old, who have motor disorders with neurological origin (such as cerebral palsy or spina bifida) or who show signs of developmental delay.
How we work
Each child has an individual plan that is implemented in a group setting. The group environment builds a strong foundation of encouragement, motivation and confidence. Parents and caregivers work alongside Conductors to encourage children with each activity. We believe this partnership approach is vital from the beginning.
In order to gain greater independence in everyday life the programme is designed to:
- Improve mobility
- Develop physical stamina
- Teach daily living skills and personal hygiene
- Build self esteem
- Improve physical skills, along with social, cognitive, academic and communication skills
The Conductor staff aim to:
- Teach children everyday skills while having fun and enjoying the process along the way
- Enable children to see the world as a place of opportunities instead of seeing it as a series of obstacles
- Maintain positive communication with parents, families and caregivers, to incorporate the skills learned at Conductive Education into everyday life situations
- Prepare children for mainstream school education
Our Team
Conductors are qualified, experienced specialists in Conductive Education, passionate about and highly committed to the work.
